This one is written by a friend of mine some 40 years ago, and never published. He didn't even bother to give it a name, so I did, and rebuilt the original boring traditional harmonies, taking it to D minor instead of A to squeeeeze out the loneliness and suicidal elements. I don't know what in the world came over him writing this.
I remember all these sacred weekends we spent together at his residence outside a small town not far from mine, listening to music, watching movies and jamming. I'm missing it. I miss a lot of my youth, but epecially this part. He was one out of very few who could follow my sometimes strange harmonies, and he did it with a smile.
We lost contact. He moved, and things started working out wrong for both of us. Last year I caught his phone number, and called him up. He was surprised by finding this in my album. He hadn't touched the guitar for years. Sorry, buddy. Once you have found it, never let it go ...
got a dirty room in a cheap hotel
to call my home
got a telephone number in a little black book
when I need a woman
got a bottle to talk to and a bible to quote
and some poetry that my baby once wrote
when the moonlight plays on my dusty floor
I call your name
but it echoes back from the empty walls
just to tell me it's just in vain
got a fistful of dreams and a box filled with rain
and a sad song to keep up the pain
got a friend in the back of the bottom drawer
he's sharp and keen
and we're getting real close to each other
he says he will set me free
and I'm getting ready to face him soon
as I gradually lose my soul to the moon
