mac gayden • jerry tuttle
Gerrard SP25 III was a horrible record player, and got the nickname "vinyl killer". Among the LP's this machine from Hell damaged for me way back in the sixties, was a compilation album with Bobby Bare, containing this song. Funny how songs can be stored away in your memory: fifty years after, all of a sudden, it rose from oblivion. I even remembered the lyrics ...?
The song was a minor single hit for Bare in 1965. Mac Gayden was a respected artist and crossover songwriter, especially known for inventing the wah-wah slide guitar style. About Jerry Tuttle I only know that he was born 11th of November 1937 and died 25th of November 2014, and that he's credited playing saxophone and organ on albums by Conway Twitty, Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie McCoy.
This song is an uncut diamond. When it came back to me after all these years, I had to search for the author because I'd lost the vinyl. I betted it was Gordon Lightfoot ... the style and the harmonies were very Gordalike. I lost a beer to myself, poured it down the hatch and added the "I'll be back today", skipped the silly talking that made Bobby Bare famous - and raised it to C for the final verse.
hey little one : don't you cry
you must be brave so dry your eyes
you know tomorrow you'll find me gone
the call of the wild leads me on
peace of mind is hard to find
lots of worries in this heart of mine
why do I wonder so aimlessly
and leave the girl : the girl that loves me
it's alright • it's alright
it's alright • I'll be back some day
over the hill by the setting sun
my love goes back to my little one
bless and keep her oh lord above
and send to her all my love
and carry me oh lonesome train
over these hills back to my love again
this will be my last time to roam
down in that valley we'll build our home
it's alright • it's alright
it's alright • I'll be back today
just in time to be too late
my little one got married today
carry me oh lonesome train
behind these hills to hide my shame
it's alright • it's alright
it's alright • I'll be on my way
