I first heard this song performed by Jerry Jeff Walker (born Ronald Clyde Crosby; 1942–2020), who in 1970 was the first one of many artists to record it, and I still cling to his version and arrangement. He also made "Desperados Waiting for a Train" famous. Guy Charles Clark (1941–2016) included both of them with his first album "Old No. 1" two years later.
