hank cochran
Though written by the well-known artist Hank Cochran and recorded by many others, this song is best known performed by Burl Ives, who was the first one to record it, in February 1961. His warm, wistful voice and humming way of singing suited it well. Cochran passed away on July 15, 2010 at the age of 74, and was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Since 1974 he'd been member of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
when you said you were leaving tomorrow
that today was our last day
I said there'd be no sorrow
that I'd laugh when you walked away
I said I'd laugh when you left me
full of funny as you went out the door
that I'd have another one waiting
I'd wave goodbye as you go
everything went off like I planned it
and I really put on quite a show
in my heart I felt I could stand it
till you walked with your grip through the door
but a little bitty tear let me down
spoiled my act as a clown
I had it made up not to make a frown
but a little bitty tear let me down
