Bad Moon Rising

john fogerty

Bad Moon Rising The NOT so very UNITED States of America has, since the very beginning, brought us some beautiful music alongside horrible presidents. The Man in the Moon here, the All-Time High Stable Genius, has with his ridiculous actions made me ashamed of the fact that way past half of all the songs I've been singing all my life are written by American composers, lyricists, singers and songwriters. This has brought ME to a ridiculous action: I never thought I should include a Creedence Song.

I HAVE played Creedence Clearwater Revival before, but always with some kind of line-up; never solo. I've been digging CCR since the very beginning, and rank the fabulous four [John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford] very high in classic rock music. I simply haven't wanted to ruin the distinct bayou- and swamp sound by rattling with one single guitar. But nowadays I find it necessary to shout out a warning against the "new world order", so I tweaked this song a bit, pimping it with a few chords. You may peel them off again ... the most important for a busker today is the shouting.

Fogerty wrote the song after watching the 1941 film "The Devil and Daniel Webster", about a deal with the devil in exchange for wealth. Fogerty himself: «It wasn't until the band was learning the song that I realized the dichotomy. Here you've got this song with all these hurricanes and blowing and raging ruin and all that, but it's 'I see a bad moon rising.' It's a happy-sounding tune, right? It didn't bother me at the time.»

Maybe it bothers him now. He's been regarded a life-long liberal Democrat, but also been fiddling around with visions of a strong leader ...

The song was first recorded in March 1969, released as a single 15th of April 1969 and included with the "Green River" album 3rd of August same year.

I see the bad moon a-risin'
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today
don't go around tonight
well it's bound to take your life
there's a bad moon on the rise

I hear hurricanes a-blowin'
I know the end is comin' soon
I fear rivers over flowin'
I hear the voice of rage and ruin
don't go around tonight
well it's bound to take your life
there's a bad moon on the rise, alright

hope you got your things together
hope you are quite prepared to die
looks like we're in for nasty weather
one eye is taken for an eye
well don't go around tonight
well it's bound to take your life
there's a bad moon on the rise

don't come around tonight
well it's bound to take your life
there's a bad moon on the rise
