Just Like a Woman

bob dylan

  Album cover

I made a trip down memory lane, and found this song residing in a very early version of the album. Why didn't it follow the updates? The reason was simple: during the eightees, I got completely fed up with Dylan, and as the many earlier requests for this song dropped gradually, I dropped it totally. When it accidentally came back to me, I didn't even remember the key. I gave it new lines of chords, and put it back. I haven't caught the Dylan virus over again, but I admit that his early work is essential.

The song was written in 1965, and was first released on the 1966 double album "Blonde on Blonde". It was also issued in a shorter version as a single, but made it "only" to #33 on Billboard. In UK it was not released at all, but the band "Manfred Mann" covered it as the first one to do so, and it reached #10 in UK and beated the original in most European countries. After this, almost 200 artists have left their footprints, and some 20 adaptions have been made. It has become one of Dylan's most regular concert songs, appearing in various versions on basic live albums like "Before the Flood", "At Budokan" and bootlegs from "The Rolling Thunder Revue".

The subject of the song has been widely discussed, never revealed and I don't want to deal with that discussion: once you adored some lady; now you don't and that's it. The lyrics have been criticised for misogyny, but this is a level just slightly above paprika on the Scoville Scale for chilli. Besides; the audience is mainly immune to such spice. Dylan has never used pen splits made of cotton.

nobody feels any pain
tonight as I stand inside the rain
everybody knows that baby's got new clothes
but lately I see her ribbons and her bows
have fallen from her curls

she takes just like a woman : yeah she does
she makes love just like a woman : yeah she does
and she aches just like a woman
but she breaks just like a little girl

Queen Mary she's my friend
yes I believe I'll go see her again
nobody has to guess that baby can't be blessed
'til she finally sees that she's like all the rest
with her fog : her amphetamine and her pearls

she takes just like a woman : yes
she makes love just like a woman : yeah she does
and she aches just like a woman
but she breaks just like a little girl

yeah it was raining from the first
and I was dying there of thirst
so I came in here
and your long-time curse hurts
but what's worse
is this pain in here
I can't stay in here
ain't it clear

that I just can't fit
yes I believe it's time for us to quit
but when we meet again : introduced as friends
please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world

ah you fake just like a woman : yes you do
you make love just like a woman : yes you do
then you ache just like a woman
but ya' break just like a little girl
