kris kristofferson
The song is from Kris' first album "Kristofferson", Monument 1970 - an album that despite containing already well-known songs recorded by the songwriter himself, failed commercially. But after Janis Joplin had a million-seller with "Me and Bobby McGee" ... the album was renamed and re-released to match this, and things worked out better.
George Hamilton IV recorded and released it first, in May 1970, a month before Kris himself did, for "Back Where It's At" - a rather slender album. Totally so far, there are 18 covers ... over fifty years.
Strange to say, but this song has not become one of Kris' most famous ones. I rate it very high; it's a real composition, with great lyrics. I've added a few chords to underscore the mood of loneliness, and to raise it from the dump of mainstream country standards.
I come from just the other side of nowhere
to this big time lonesome town
they got a lot of ice and snow here
half as cold as all the people I've found
every way I try to go here
seems to bring me down
I've seen about enough to know where I belong
I've got a mind to see the headlights shining
on that old white line between my heart and home
sick of spending Sundays wishing they were Mondays
sitting in a park alone
so give my best to anyone who's left who ever done me
any loving way but wrong
tell them that the pride of just the other side of nowhere's goin' home
taking nothing back to show there
for these dues I've paid
but the soul I almost sold here
and the body I've been giving away
fading from the neon nighttime glow here
heading for the light of day
just the other side of nowhere going home
