Proserpina

  Proserpina at Royal Albert Hall

19th of January 2010 Kate McGarrigle passed away, after fighting Sarcoma - a rare form of cancer - for 3 years. 9th of December, 4 weeks earlier, she performed on stage for the last time, together with family and friends at Royal Albert Hall, London, in "A Not So Silent Night" - a charity concert, now annual, aiding the fund against cancer carrying her own name. She brought to the audience a brand new song: Proserpina.

The song is a truncated version of roman mythology's explanation of why the seasons are changing. You'd better read about it HERE. The song is dedicated to her daughter Martha Wainwright, who guided her on stage that night (the keys she naturally found herself!) and waited for two years until she recorded it for her album "Come Home to Mama". Kate was out of time to record it herself, and I bet she knew. I got it from YouTube immediately after I received the bad and sad news. And ever since THEN, the chord D sixth has meant something special to me.

Thank You, Kate. This was a dignified swan song from a great artist and songwriter.

Proserpina : Proserpina
come home to mama
come home to mama
Proserpina : Proserpina
come home to mama
come home to mama now

I shall punish the earth
I shall turn down the heat
I shall take away every morsel to eat
I shall turn every field into stone
where I'll walk : crying alone
crying for Proserpina : Proserpina
come home to mama
come holme to mama now

Proserpina : Proserpina
go home to your mother
go home to Ceres
Proserpina : Proserpina
go home to your mother
go home to Ceres now

she has punished the earth
she has turned down the heat
she has taken away every morsel to eat
she has turned every field into stone
where she walks : crying alone
crying for Proserpina : Proserpina
come home to mama
come home to mama now
