tom waits
Second track on Waits' second album "The Heart of Saturday Night", Asylum -74. Among a few other artists, Celine Dion and Nancy Griffith have covered it, but I stick to the original. A beautiful song about not knowing what to lose until it is lost.
For many years, this song has been tabbed wrong; sorry. I don't know where I've been ... I've never played it that way myself. The guitar has been drinkin', not me. This is correct. -khw, 2025-
never saw the morning till I stayed up all night
never saw the sunshine till you turned out the light
never saw my hometown till I stayed away too long
never heard the melody till I needed the song
never saw the white line till I was leaving you behind
never knew I needed you till I was caught up in a bine
never spoke I love you till I cursed you in vain
never felt my heart strange till I nearly went insane
never saw the east coast till I moved to the west
never saw the moonlight till it shone right on your breast
never saw your heart till somebody tried to take it away
never saw your tears till they rolled down your face
never saw the morning till I stayed up all night
never saw the sunshine till you turned out the light
never saw my hometown till I stayed away too long
never heard the melody till I needed the song
