The Rose

amanda mcbroom

  Janis Joplin

Well renowned cabaret artist Amanda McBroom will forever be associated with this song, as well as Bette Midler. The song was written in a hurry, described HERE before Amanda had recorded anything, and was never meant to be published at all. But when the movie was coming up, the producers searched for a title song, and urged by her friend Michele Brourman, Amanda sent it in. It was rejected, of course. Twice. The movie was loosely based on the life of rock star Janis Joplin, and the song was as far from Janis' style as could be. But music supervisor Paul Rothchild, who'd also been Joplin's producer, had another opinion: he saw the contrast, and asked Bette Midler, who had been picked out for the role and performing the title song which ever it became. Bette insisted ... and so it was.

That's how and why "The Pearl" became "The Rose": Joplin's family refused the use of both name and nickname for ANY movie.

I've never heard a man sing this one. There should be no obstacles, and I do it. With pleasure.

some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed
some say love it is a razor that leaves your heart to bleed
some say love it is a hunger • an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower • and you it's only seed

it's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
it's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
it's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

when the night has been too lonely and the road has been to long
and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
just remember : in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose
