The Water Is Wide

traditional

campfire I'm not dreaming, and I'm not drunk. The scene is a celtic campfire in the stone ages. The nearby sea is washing in. The misty clouds are darkening as the fog covers the horizon. They hustle shoulders, munching bones while humming the lament of life. One of them falls in with a fifth, beaten by a hungry rat, and musical evolution has started. The primitive harmony is born. The celtic sound.

I KNOW it happened this way. It spread from camp to camp, from district to another, overseas and waycross countries. Accumulating laments of all kinds, as speech grew common, and OF COURSE turning it all into the most sensitive issue of all: desire, reproduction and love. At the end, the Music Business has nailed us to listen to anything sexually exposed ... which is profitable, but reduces feelings to a state of stupidity. Well; we're born innocent. Music history washes in by pondering about origins.

This song is also referred to as "Oh, Waly, Waly". The Irish folk song "Carrickfergus" from the 18th century share the lines «but the sea is wide : I cannot swim over : and neither have I wings to fly». This song is a leaf at the tip of a branch of a tree which roots grow from the put off campfire I started with. I don't mind who recorded it first. I have chosen the lyrics, and they are many, among these I felt were right. That boat is waiting for us, come what may. Music's evolution relie on hungry rats.

the water is wide : I can't cross o'er
neither have I the wings to fly
build me a boat that can carry two
and both shall row : my true love and I

a ship there is and she sails the seas
she’s laden deep : as deep can be
but not so deep as the love I’m in
and I know not if I sink or swim

I leaned my back up against a young oak
thinking he were a trusty tree
but first he bended and then he broke
thus did my love prove false to me

oh love is handsome and love is fine
bright as a jewel when first it’s new
but love grows old and waxes cold
and fades away like the morning dew
