Wichita Lineman

jimmy webb

  lineman

This song should not be the among the first ones you go for, if you're a rookie. Jimmy Webb is a piano man, and he rolls out a new harmony almost with each note - some of them quite strange. I've managed to cut it down to 13 chords, and Don't You Dare to cut further ...

The song was first recorded by Glen Campbell in 1968, and was a crossover hit. Like most Webb songs, it's neither country nor pop nor jazz nor anything ... it's "Webb". His own recording is a remarkable experience. It's not widely covered, nor is it a preferred performance among buskers and pub artists. Obviously not. But in a class by itself, it is my #1 among eccentric popular music songs, followed by a couple of other Webb compositions ... that man must be growing obscure mushrooms in his backyard.

I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road
searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singing in the wires • I can hear you in the whine
and the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
and if it snows that south down stretch won't ever stand the strain
and I need you more than want you and I want you for all time
and the Wichita Lineman is still on the line
