bob dylan
In 1974, Bob Dylan rounded up a long tour with The Band, divorced Sara and sat down writing songs that after several touch-ups became the album "Blood on the Tracks", returning to Columbia after 2 albums with Asylum. It was meant to be released for Xmas '74, but was delayed because he cut half the playlist over again, and produced it himself - in Minneapolis, while the first takes were made in New York, produced by Phil Ramone. Dispite this, the result had a consistence no other Dylan album ever had. It got a mixed reception, from "Masterpiece" to "What the f...", but as the years have gone by, the first characterization has won. Myself, I put this album on top off ALL I've heard from him.
Dylan himself denies that the lyrics are autobiographic, but I don't trust that guy. He's always been vague.
The album is entirely written and recorded in D open tuning, influenced by Irish folk musician Paul Brady. Playing nylon string, this tuning trick sounds disgusting, thus my humble transition and conversion. Play it medley with "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" : these are among the best love songs ever written.
I've seen love go by my door • it's never been this close before
never been so easy or so slow
I've been shooting in the dark too long • when something isn't right it's wrong
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go
dragon clouds so high above • I've only known careless love
it won't ever hit me from below
but this time'round it's more correct • right on target so direct
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go
purple clover • Queen Anne lace • crimson hair across your face
you could make me cry if you don't know
can't remember what I was thinking of • you must've been spoiling me too much love
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go
flowers on the hillside blooming crazy
crickets talking back and forth in rhyme
blue river running slow and lazy
I could stay with you forever and never ever realize the time
situations have ended sad • relationships have all been bad
mine have been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud
but there's no way I can compare all them scenes to this affair
you're gonna make me lonesome when you go
you're gonna make me wonder what I'm doing
staying far behind without you
you're gonna make me wonder what I'm saying
you're gonna give myself some good talking to
well I'll look for you in old Honolulu • in San Fransisco and Ashtabula
you'll have to leave me now I know
but I'll see you in the sky above • in the tall grass and in the ones I love
and you're gonna make me lonesome when you go
